Different Game Formats

Golf isn't just about your total score. There are many fun ways to play! Here are the most popular formats.

Stroke Play (Medal Play)

The most common way to play!

What is it?

In stroke play, you count every single shot you take throughout the entire round. The player with the lowest total score after 18 holes wins.

Why it's Fun:

It's a pure test of your own game. You are competing against yourself and the course, trying to get your best personal score.

How it Works

  • Every shot counts, from your first tee shot to your last putt.
  • You play against everyone else in the group or tournament.
  • Your final score is your total number of strokes.

💡 Stan's Tip:

Every shot matters! Don't give up on a hole, as a few extra shots can add up quickly.

Match Play

A head-to-head battle!

What is it?

In match play, you compete against one other player to win individual holes. The total score doesn't matter, only who wins the most holes.

Why it's Fun:

It's exciting and aggressive! You can have a bad hole and still win the match. It feels like a direct duel!

How it Works

  • The player with the lower score on a hole wins that hole.
  • If you win a hole, you go '1 up'. If you lose, you go '1 down'.
  • The match is over when one player is 'up' by more holes than there are left to play (e.g., '3 up' with 2 holes left).

💡 Stan's Tip:

Play smart against your opponent. If they are in trouble, a safe shot might be enough to win the hole.

Scramble

The ultimate team game!

What is it?

A scramble is a super fun team format, perfect for all skill levels. Everyone hits a shot, the team picks the best one, and everyone hits their next shot from that spot.

Why it's Fun:

It's low-pressure and very social. You get to hit from great spots and it helps beginners contribute to the team score!

How it Works

  • Everyone on the team (usually 2-4 players) tees off.
  • The team decides which shot is the best.
  • All players move their balls to that spot and hit their second shot.
  • Repeat this process until the ball is in the hole. The team has one score per hole.

💡 Stan's Tip:

Let beginners or less consistent players hit first. This takes the pressure off and lets big hitters go for it at the end!

Best Ball (Four-Ball)

Teamwork makes the dream work!

What is it?

In a team of two, each player plays their own ball for the entire hole. At the end of the hole, you take the *best* score between the two of you as the team score.

Why it's Fun:

It allows you to play your own game but with a safety net. If you have a bad hole, your partner can save the day!

How it Works

  • You and your partner both play your own golf ball from tee to green.
  • If you score a 4 and your partner scores a 5, the team score for that hole is 4.
  • You can play this as stroke play (lowest total team score wins) or match play (best score wins the hole).

💡 Stan's Tip:

Communicate with your partner. If one player hits a safe shot, the other can be more aggressive and try for a birdie.
