"Par" is the number of strokes a good golfer should take to complete a hole. Most courses have 18 holes with a total par of 72 (meaning 72 strokes for the whole round). Here are the types of holes:
Par 3
Short hole, usually 100-250 yards
Goal: Reach the green with your first shot
Par 4
Medium hole, usually 250-475 yards
Goal: Reach the green in 2 shots, then putt
Par 5
Long hole, usually 475+ yards
Goal: Reach the green in 3 shots, then putt
Get to the golf course 20-30 minutes before your tee time. Check in at the pro shop, pay your fees, and warm up!
💡 Tips for Success:
- •Bring your clubs, golf balls, tees, and a water bottle
- •Wear comfortable clothes and golf shoes if you have them
- •Hit some balls on the practice range if there's time
Go to hole #1 a few minutes before your tee time. Introduce yourself to your playing partners if playing with others!
💡 Tips for Success:
- •Decide who goes first (usually lowest handicap or flip a tee)
- •Make sure everyone is ready and standing safely behind the tee box
- •Take a practice swing or two, then tee it up!
The first shot of each hole! Tee up your ball and hit your driver or fairway wood down the fairway.
💡 Tips for Success:
- •Use a tee - you're allowed to on the tee box!
- •Aim for the fairway (the short grass), not the rough or trees
- •Remember: smooth and balanced beats hard and wild!
Walk or ride to your ball. Choose the right club based on your distance to the green.
💡 Tips for Success:
- •Look for yardage markers (colored stakes or sprinkler heads)
- •Consider wind direction and any hazards between you and the green
- •If in doubt, take the club that gets you closer, not necessarily on the green
As you get closer to the green (within 100 yards), use your wedges or short irons for precision shots.
💡 Tips for Success:
- •Look at the flagstick position - front, middle, or back of green
- •If you're in a bunker, use your sand wedge and remember to rake!
- •Take your time - accuracy matters more than power here
Once on the putting green, mark your ball, repair your ball mark, and get ready to putt!
💡 Tips for Success:
- •Read the green - look for slopes and breaks
- •Don't step on other players' putting lines
- •Take a practice stroke to feel the distance
Use your putter to roll the ball into the cup. This is often where you'll take the most strokes, so practice is key!
💡 Tips for Success:
- •Focus on distance first, then direction
- •Keep your head still and follow through smoothly
- •Longer putts: focus on getting close. Short putts: focus on making it!
Pick up your ball from the hole, record your score, and head to the next tee box. Repeat steps 2-7 for each hole!
💡 Tips for Success:
- •Write down your score before you forget
- •Let faster groups play through if you're taking a long time
- •Stay positive - every hole is a fresh start!
After hole 18, congratulate your playing partners, return your cart (if you used one), and celebrate completing a round!
💡 Tips for Success:
- •Add up your total score - don't worry if it's high at first!
- •Thank the staff at the pro shop
- •Think about what you learned for next time
